OK, so that title is lifted from Adam Vary's astute "So You Think You Can Dance" recap in Entertainment Weekly. But they always say it better than I could, so I thought I would start with that.

I wasn't going to post about the show here, because I didn't think I had enough to say, and I didn't think anybody read this anymore. But that was before the dumbassery ensued, and Facebook has it's limitations.

I have to say, I enjoyed the premiere, a lot. Most of the people who auditioned were fantastic, or at least entertaining, and aside from a few reality-TV social faux pas, there was hardly any exploitative "let's show the bad people" business going on.

That Sonya is a hoot, though she's worse than Mia with her "your flowy arms" or whatever and her crying and the way she says daaaaaahhhhncing.

However, before I start picking favorites, there is another issue I need to address, and that is the watercooler topic of the day, the same sex male ballroom dancers. Now, I'll get to their dancing in a second, which should be the only issue here, but unfortunately, it wasn't.

First of all, let's just clear up a few things for the SYTYCD producers: Same sex ballroom dancing is not that weird. Just check out salsa night at your local gay or lesbian bar.

Now that we got the general ignorance of the producers out of the way, we can focus on Nigel's dumbass comments. There was this one: "I think you probably alienate most of our audience," which made both me and, apparently, the writer from Entertainment Weekly scream at our televisions, "Who do you think watches your show besides gay men and straight women? Those are all people who would be alienated by two guys dancing together, for sure."

I calmed down a bit, and then there was this one, also from the lovely Nigel, who was still going on: "I'd like to see you both dancing with a girl. I think you might enjoy it." Ohhhh, the subtext that permeates all 5 seasons of this show plus the 7 or so seasons of AI.

I calmed down a bit when Mary started critiquing them as she should, as dancers (the verdict: not good, but I'll get to that in a second), and when she turned back to Nigel to try to ask him about the actual dancing, all he could come up with were the comments above.

Now, yes, their dancing sucked. Big time. But the problem here was not that it was two guys, Nigel, it was that they couldn't dance. As Mary said, they had no technique, and it was confusing that they kept switching roles. Also unfortunately, I kind of agreed with Nigel when he said that they looked like Will Ferrell in Blades of Glory.

What really sucks for them, and for the state of FOX produced reality shows, is that their bad dancing just egged the producers and judges on, forcing them to become an example of why same sex ballroom just WILL NOT WORK. Ever.

I would be interested to see what Nigel would say if a same sex couple went in there and danced well.

OK, now on to the rest.

Gabi Rojas is already my favorite ;), though I'm concerned that she shouldn't be dancing with rheumatoid arthritis, and I'm concerned that she will become this year's medical sob story.

I wasn't blown away by the blond with the grandparents as everybody else was, but she's fine.

I love the tapper with the clothing that Mary deemed "weird." Uh, Mary, I know you live in foofy ballroom world, but street clothes are not "weird." Actually, your clothes are a little weird.

Natalie, Katee's roommate is back! She seems to have matured and I enjoyed seeing her without Ka-TEE constantly by her side.

That's all. Can't wait for next week! What did y'all think?

I don't watch that show but I found your interpretation right on the mark. Maybe one day it will be different. It wasn't too many years ago that they wouldn't be on at all. Things do change, albeit slowly.
