I know tomorrow is election day. It was all that was on my mind all day today.
But then, I read this (it was posted on the greys community, and I wanted to rant about it here):
http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2008/11/bro oke-smith-le.html
And now I kind of want to cry. But I'm trying to keep my wits about me here, and remember that Ausiello has a tendency to editorialize. In reality, this probably has a lot more to do with some kind of conflict with the actress herself than anything else. The statement from Shonda at the end of the article seems to imply exactly that.
Unfortunately for me, though, I liked Erica Hahn. I liked the Callie/Erica story. Hell, I even liked Callie for a minute there. I liked all the directions Grey's was going this season, I was connecting with the characters again, and I felt like they had restored all the magic from season 1 again. But being a fan of this show is kind of like being one of the characters on the show - all of the behind the scenes drama with firing actors, creating spinoffs, trying to live up to it's promise as an Emmy winning, number 1 show - it's all an emotional roller coaster.
And don't get me started on my soapbox about gay characters on network television. I was so proud of Grey's for a minute there, because as awkward as it was for the characters, they were finally venturing into territory that I had only before seen on pay cable, on The L Word. And then... OK, stepping off soapbox.
I know in reality it probably has nothing to do with that, but it just makes me sad when stuff like this happens. When it looks like they're going to get away with having a gay couple on TV with very little fanfare, and they go ahead an create something that fans latch on to, and then poof! it disappears, because we couldn't possibly continue to portray an interesting, true to life storyline, because some people are insistent that it shouldn't exist in life or on TV. It's the same rant I have about the cancellation of South of Nowhere.
But, to go back to the beginning of my argument where I try to keep my wits about me - Ausiello does tend to editorialize a lot. It's entirely possible that Smith was fired because maybe she forgot her lines, or she was late a lot, or she was sucky at her job, or she wasn't getting along with the other actors, or she wasn't getting along with the writers. Not that I'm accusing her of doing any of those things, I'm just saying, that actors are employees like everyone else, and sometimes they get fired in the same way that everyone else does. Sometimes the producing team has to fire an actor for being a bad employee, and THEN deal with the fallout. (I.e. Gale Harold on Vanished!) So if that's what happened, fine.
But they still could have finished what they started, broken Callie and Erica up for some legitimate reason, and had her character fade into oblivion, because the alternative really does make it look like ABC/GA has something to hide, like they're trying to make us think that they are hastily exiting a "controversial" subject. Plus, Callie without Erica is ANNOYING and I don't want to sit through another season of that!
Maybe NOW they'll bring Addison back???

It's the whole process, especially with TV being so commercial, that's frustrating me right now.
